Final Intervention

Begun by artists Noemi Lakmaier and Joy Stanley, Final Intervention is a new artist-lead initiative responding to the lack of opportunities for early-career installation artists to make and show new work. It aims to organise projects/exhibitions within buildings about to be pulled down. This will mark the buildings’ transition between domestic/commercial use and final demolition.

Once a building has been identified, artists will be selected through an open call based on a demonstrable track record of creating exciting, site-specific interventions and a sensitivity to the building’s particular context.

Artists will be encouraged to visit the building and to engage with the local community to inform their response to the building once it has been vacated. Involvement of the local community is essential to the concept of Final Intervention.

Once buildings are demolished the work is gone forever. To document it, it is anticipated that there will be a small print or online publication with each project/exhibition.

The NAN Artists’ New Collaboration Bursary is supporting a six month development period to research and network in order to achieve our three core aims: identifying funding, finding and working with further collaborators and a finding a site/location for the first in a series of Final Intervention projects/exhibitions.

Final Intervention should grow into a sustainable initiative continuing to extend its networks and to locate further suitable buildings. More long-term future outcomes could therefore include:
* An ongoing programme of exhibitions and projects in buildings about to be demolished.
* Access for local residents to contemporary installation art within their own communities.
* Publications, seminars and workshops in response to projects and exhibitions .
* Ongoing support and exposure for, especially early-career, installation artists.
